If the mailbox protocol is IMAP then that's the way it works. Its not the iPad deleting the email it's the server responding to the deletion request. You cannot modify that. AOL would need to change its mail delivery format to POP3 for you to maintain the email on the server.

Contact AOL support and see if they have an option for POP3 to maintain your email on the server.

Nothing to do with Apple or your ipad, you'll need to talk to your mail provider on how to change your account to pop instead of imap.
