How can I play an MP4 file (for example, on a network drive, or on my Mac) with 7.1.4-channel, Atmos-encoded audio on an Apple TV 4K? (assuming that I have all the necessary external hardware - I'm already streaming Atmos via Netflix, for example...)
Alternatively, how can I play the same file on my Mac using the TV.app (or another application), connected via HDMI to an Atmos-compatible receiver and send the bitstream rather than a 7.1 PCM downmix?
Try Home Sharing for files with Dolby Atmos in Dolby Digital Plus format (not Dolby Atmos in Dolby TrueHD format). That should stream as-is to the Apple TV 4K box, and then that should send it to the AV receiver or soundbar in uncompressed Dolby MAT format.

Dolby Atmos support is available on select Macs (2018 or later) with macOS Catalina or later, virtualized through the internal speakers or supported AirPods. I haven’t seen it confirmed working for wired (HDMI) audio output from a Mac, so perhaps that isn’t supported.

Thanks for the suggestion. I thought that I tried this, and failed, but I'll try again.
In the meantime, A USB stick in a Sony Blu-ray player is working perfectly... :-)
Regarding the virtualized output - this is true - but not interesting for me. I have a full 7.1.4 loudspeaker configuration...
No. The Blu-ray Player handshakes with the surround processor and therefore "knows" that it (the surround processor) can decode Atmos. So the Blu-ray Player sends an Atmos bitstream out.
If the Blu-ray Player decoded the stream, there would be no way to send more than 8 channels (typically 7.1) over HDMI.
So you load your Atmos file in MP4 format to the USB stick then it gets decoded by the Blu Ray player and output to your 7.1.4 speaker system?
