Crackling noises when listening to audio through Safari

This seems to be a common and old and problem in apple computers. It seems to manifest itself in different ways and, by reading various threads as old as 2019, on different computers and OSX versions.

I use Logic Pro too but there I have no problem at all! I only see it on Safari audio, e.g. Youtube. But it is possible that it happens on other streaming apps such as Spotify, etc. which I do not use. I guess it started on Catalina. I had, almost at the same time, installed OBS Studio and created another multi output device. So I removed it, but of course this did not help, which probably confirms that a SW update had triggered it, as I mentioned, i.e. probably Catalina or a Catalina update.

I installed Chrome and I don't see the problem there at all. So I find it very surprising that Apple haven't corrected a problem on their main browser!!

I am on iMac 27'', Late 2013. Catalina 10.15.7. My audio device is Behringer Xenyx UFX1204.

I have had no audio problems since I put together the studio in late 2013 and not until November, 2021 when the crackling noises started appearing.

Hi, Ramo17166, and thanks for reaching out. We see you're having audio issues in Safari when using your Behringer audio device. We'll be glad to assist.

To clarify, does this only happen when the Behringer interface is being used? Or does it happen with all external devices disconnected and using the computer's internal sound options as well?

If it's only happening when you're using the Behringer device, that would indicate and issue or compatibility problem with that device and your Mac. If that's the case, you'd need to reach out to Behringer to look into this with you further to determine compatibility: Welcome to Behringer Support

Thanks for your reply Michelle.

- The problem is present with all audio outputs.

- The problem is seen only in Safari, not in Chrome. I now use chrome 100%.

- The problem appeared only in November, 2021. Before that it has not been seen since 2013, indicating some SW update.

- There are several other complaints on several forums with exactly the same type of crackling noise when listening through Safari (and perhaps other streaming services, which I do not use, but perhaps use Safari as platform).

I hope this can help you in isolating the problem.

Assuming it’s a Safari issue, a fix isn’t possible unfortunately because your iMac can’t be upgraded from Catalina, which is eligible for critical security fixes only. You’ll need to explore alternate solutions. Good luck!
