A bit of research yielded the following clue buried deep within How to apply for Apple Card - Apple Support:

See Footnote 2:

"To access and use all Apple Card features, you need to add Apple Card to an eligible iPhone or iPad that you own with the latest version of iOS or iPadOS."

I assume you applied using a supported browser. Ok, so an iPhone is not strictly required, but I submit the requirement to have an iPhone merely to add an Apple Card to your Mac is not ideal.

Certain caveats are described in the Apple Card Customer Agreement. Specifically, Using Your Account Without a Required Device states "you will not have access to the full experience, functionality, and benefits of Apple Card."'

And what's a "Required Device"?

“Required Device” means an iOS device with a version of iOS installed that supports use of Apple Card in your Apple Wallet or an iPadOS device that has a version of iPadOS (as applicable) that supports the use of Apple Card.

That's the "Apple Product" your GS representative alluded to. Note the lack of an Apple Product running macOS.

I surmise that adding Apple Card to your Mac's Wallet is part of "the full experience" you're missing 🤣

I understand your dilemma to be that you have neither a physical card nor an iPhone / iPad, and GS won't agree to send you a physical card without one. Besides, it won't have a number on it anyway. With such needs in mind, Apple provided the following site:

https://card.apple.com

Sign in with your Apple ID.

Here's the bad news: that site does not appear to offer a way to retrieve anything resembling an account number you could add to your Mac's Wallet manually, and before you ask it doesn't appear on any downloadable statement. Unless I'm missing something, this seems to be a dilemma that Apple neglected to consider.

My research into your question concludes you can only accomplish what you seek by using a device like an iPhone. It doesn't have to be yours, but you would need to borrow one from a willing and trustworthy helper. Then, you can refer to the following Apple Support document describing how to use its Wallet app to retrieve an account number: How to find your Apple Card number - Apple Support.

Apple ought to address this oversight. I suggest you call Apple and explain that — as preposterous as it may seem — not every human being with money they're willing to spend using an Apple Card has an iPhone to go with it.

On second thought don't bother calling them. The Apple Card Agreement explains everything in detail. Calling Apple will only result in them telling you everything is working exactly as you agreed it would work. It took me about a half hour to reach that conclusion, so calling them will just waste your time and theirs.
