Verify if you are in Safe Mode.

About Checking Boot:
"Normal" means you are booted up "Normal Mode". So, troubleshooting this, you know you are in Normal Mode.
Enrypted drive should just demand a password.
Lock Icon shows when you have applied a firmware password.
If your Mac doesn't start up all the way - Apple Support
.
Hold shift at startup, but have your userid and password at the ready.the words Safe Mode should appear.
A parade of unusual things happens.
• Your Mac loads just enough of the kernel to do a disk check. Then it proceeds to do a disk check. This can take an extra about five minutes.
• your userid and password are required, even if you normally auto-login. So have them handy.
• Your Mac adds ONLY a minimal set of Apple-Only extensions, Not including graphics acceleration extensions. Screen updates will therefore be wonky and slow, and the screen may re-draw multiple times, but it ultimately should be accurate.
• Your Mac assumes defaults for as many settings as possible. This is the key for re-setting the screen, but there is a little more to it: Resolution is likely to be lower and settings ordinary. Use this as a starting point to customize settings to your liking.
Any changes you make in Safe Mode will "stick" in regular mode after you restart.
• after restart in normal mode, your Mac will take slightly longer to start up [once] because it rebuilds some system caches.
"Works in Safe mode, fails in regular mode" implies "It's something you added".
Oh! Okey dokey.
Any further suggestions? It's not the end of life on earth if I can't get it into safe mode. But I'd like to know that I can. Especially since now I'm trying to add Topaz DeNoise AI update and the Mac says sorry, it's "damaged," and the tech at Topaz suggested I start up in safe mode and try it again. That's a no-go. Not been a good day as far as tech is concerned. ;)

External Keyboad:
Sounds like an encrypted drive —one that may have failed. So, try an external keyboard, seeing if it works for you when entering the data.
I start it up without holding the shift key and withholding the shift key. And did what you said and both of them say boot mode: normal. Whatever that means. ?
And I used to get Safe Mode appearing after waiting a while. It's a no go on that now. Argh.
¿Are you holding the shift key on the built-in keyboard or a wired keyboard DIRECTLY on the chassis, not on a display or other Hub?
Others generally come alive too late for that key to be seen.
Built-in.
We'll this might be insightful. All I get is an icon of a padlock and my password won't open it. Yay, team.
perfect. ok, thanks. I will get that solved this week. I appreciate your help. Here we go... (I'll be back.)
