iPads will sync to the AppleID that has been registered to the iPad.
You can check the AppleID registered to the iPad by going to Settings > Profile and seeing which email is registered on your device.
If it is the same AppleID (e.g. eMail) that your son is using then it will need to be changed to your AppleID.
If that is the case please go through the steps outlined in the following link to minimise any legacy issues from using the current AppleID or in other words, treat the iPad as if you are selling it or giving away:
