Now and then the badge shown in the screenshot on Messages appears. I've always wondered what it is and why it appears and disappears. Today I noticed that the widget on my iPad that shows the battery charge, which was only 17%, looks similar to the mystery badge on the Messages icon. Does anyone else ever see this badge on the Message icon and is it there to warn about a low battery?

The icon in the battery widget you see is indicating the battery level of the iPad itself. You can confirm this by looking in the upper right of your screenshot, where the battery display shows the power also at 17%: Show the iPad battery percentage - Apple Support.

Thank you so much! That’s exactly what it was. I played around with it using Chrome , my default browser, on one device and noticed that badge appeared on the Chrome icon on the second device. I couldn’t make it appear with messages again but that’s OK. At least I know what it means now. Thanks again.
