Restrictions turn on by itself

I have Restrictions turned on for my kids but not on my own phone. It’s quite maddening when I randomly pick up my phone to discover Siri has been disabled and Restrictions have turned themselves on. As annoying as that is, it gets even worse. When I go into Settings and turn Restrictions off again, I find that all of my icons have been rearranged, moved to various screens, and/or out of the folders they used to be in. I’ve used these Restrictions for my kids for YEARS and haven’t ever had this problem. It’s happened multiple times in the last few months and it’s getting REALLY OLD. Has anyone else had this experience and how did you fix it?!

Thanks for those details, momof2littles.

From what you've shared with us, especially that it has been happening for awhile, it sounds like something is triggering the Content & Privacy restrictions in Screen Time, possibly restricting the apps you can use along with Siri, and then adding the apps back to the device without preserving their earlier positions or folders.

From that, we think we can find a solution by figuring out what is enabling these restrictions in the first place, as that seems to cause all the other behavior.

Without sharing any of your personal details, as this is a public forum, can you let us know if any of the following fit your situation:

  • Do you share an Apple ID with your children, or is your Apple ID signed into any devices they use?
  • Does anyone else use or have access to your iPhone, or any other device that your Apple ID is signed in to?
  • Would you say the behavior occurs rarely, frequently, or somewhere in the middle? Is there any activity that it seems to happen with more than others?
  • Do you use Shortcuts?

Let us know, and we'll go from there.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for reaching out, momof2littles.

It sounds like you're running into some difficulty with restrictions. We can help.

Before we begin, can you confirm the following for us:

  • Which iPhone model, and iOS version are you using?
  • When you say you're using restrictions, do you mean Screen Time or something different?
  • When you say your apps are out of order, do you mean every Home Screen, or just the App Library? (If you're not sure, check out Organize the Home Screen and App Library on your iPhone).

Let us know, and we'll go from there.

Hello,

• I have an iPhone 12

• Software version is 15.2.1 but this has been happening long before that update.

• I’m referring to the Content & Privacy restrictions that are under Screen Time.

• My Home Screens are all out of order. After I turn the restrictions off again, I have to re-enable Siri, Apps are rearranged from page to page, and some are removed from folders they’ve always been in. I don’t use the App Library so I have no idea what happens there.

  • I do not share an Apple ID with my children, nor should my ID be signed in anywhere on their devices
  • This is not being caused by anyone else doing something on my phone. It just happened again the other night when I was not even touching my phone.
  • It is becoming more frequent. The last time it happened in the evening. Sometimes it's in the middle of the day. Sometimes it happens after I do an iOS update. Sometimes it just does it when nothing else has changed. It always happens when I'm not using my phone.
  • I do not use shortcuts.
