How to abort Monterey installation?

Trying to install Monterey on a Macbook Air, the installation has stopped over and over on "less than 1 minute to finish installation". We want to abort or stop the install, but when rebooted, the computer screen returns to the beginning of the last(?) 29 minute installation bar. There are no other options or responses. How can we stop the installation process?

Try booting to Safe Mode. That boot up takes minutes and clears caches and other things that may allow you to then boot normally.

Yup--tried three times, was returned the screen with install running (at the beginning of that 30 min last step), and it hung up again. Also rebooted using Safe Mode which had the same effect.

We finally did get out with a command-R that a) gave a menu with options that were no help BUT b) revealed the Apple Menu options and Preferences had an option of rebooting with the old operating system. That worked, after which the Monterey window could be shut down with an esc.

The key was figuring out how to see something besides a black screen with an Apple and a never ending install bar.

Thanks, all
