PDF protected by password, but I didn't create one!

I have PDF's that I've opened and edited before, but now some (not all) are password protected so I can't delete or add pages, etc. I am using MacOS 11.6.2, Preview application. I have never put a password on any of them.

There can be two types of passwords set on PDFs. An overall document opening password, and a password set to prevent document changes that presents a password challenge when you attempt to change PDF content.

Preview does not automatically set either password on a PDF, and you deny doing so. That leaves someone that you shared the PDF with as the originator of the password.
