Yes, thanks!
Go to system preferences > keyboard > input sources. On that list, you should only have "British". If you have "British PC", remove it. That is the input source which puts " at shift 2.

Please provide specific examples of what you are talking about. The fix depends on having such info.
For example, if you are talking about getting z when you hit the y key (or a when you hit the q key), it means you have the wrong Input Source active, and you need to go to system preferences > keyboard > input sources and make sure you only have one keyboard on your list and that it is the right one for your language.

Thank you so much for responding so quickly. It is the " and the @ which are transposed. I'm not sure how it happened, but only recently.
That's definitely the wrong Input Source. If you are using an Apple keyboard, the right input source is "British". If you are using a PC keyboard, the right input source is "British PC".
Keep only one on the list so you don't accidentally switch them.
I have just ensured that Input Source is British, but sadly it hasn't worked. I am sure it is something simple, where I probably double clicked on something or converged two keys or something like that inadvertently.

If your only Input Source is British, then @ has to be on Shift 2. What do you get instead?
Do you have an Apple keyboard?

I will do that. But I have a confession, that my IMAC is not Mojave but High Sierra. EEEk does that make a difference,
No problem, the two British input sources and their effects have been the same for a very long time.
Tom Gewecke, you are a GENIUS. I have just remeoved British PC and USA from Input Sources and EUREKA it worked.Thank you soooooo much Where are you emailing from? Which country? Do you work for Apple?
Great to hear you got it fixed. Those two layouts often get confused. I'm in Arizona, USA. Like most people answering questions in the forums, I'm a user like yourself volunteering to help people with problems.
Which keys?
Modifier keys?
Sys Prefs>Keyboard>Modifier Keys...
Thank you so much for responding so quickly. It is the " and the @ which are transposed. I'm not sure how it happened, but only recently.
The modifier keys shown in System Preferences/keyboard/ modifier Keys list does not include " and @
Incidentally there is only one keyboard connected to my desktop
I think I have input source as British. I will try again.
Yes, Apple keyboard.
shift 2 should be @ but it isn't, it is "
Shift ' should be " but it isn't it is @
Does that make sense? Well, actually no it doesn't, but what I mean is can you understand it?
I will do that. But I have a confession, that my IMAC is not Mojave but High Sierra. EEEk does that make a difference, are you now tearing your hair out....
