.PKInstallSandboxManager

Less a question then just an update post since in researching the issue I saw there were questions regarding this issue.

Yesterday I noticed I was running out of space on my internal boot drive. DaisyDisk showed a significant portion of that size drain was the .PKInstallSandboxManager folder with several subdirectories each housing a partial XCode install. Each directory was running about 15Gb for a total of 80Gb. One of the prior posts here noted not to remove those directories, but to do a safe boot and see if that doesn't clear out the temp files. It didn't. I called Apple Support to see if there was a problem with doing an rm on those folders, but only got the standard try reinstalling the OS response. I went ahead and did a sudo rm -r /Library/InstallerSandboxes/.PKInstallSanboxManager. No issues to report with doing that.

The only reason for reporting this is there appears to be a side effect of the oversized XCode .PKInstall files. While investigating this I kept seeing the available space on the drive dropping gradually with almost nothing open other than maintenance and repair software, DaisyDisk, terminal, Activity Monitor. According to DaisyDisk the growth wasn't in the InstallerSandboxes files, but actually in hidden space. When I ran the rm command though DaisyDisk showed the hidden space size stop growing and reversed. Apparently aside from taking up a fair amount of space the InstallerSandox files were continually growing, although at a slow rate.

I have not done any recent updates but there was a January 22 update to MRTConfigData. That is as close as I can come to a guess on source of the issue.

Hello Sean Calvert,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Based on your post, you've had some issues creating space on your Mac.

It sounds like Xcode might be using more space than desired on your Mac. As suggested by Apple Support, did you move forward with the reinstall of macOS?

Back up your Mac

How to reinstall macOS

Then we'd ensure Xcode is up to date: Use the App Store to update apps on Mac

If that doesn't solve it, you may have better help reaching out to Developer Support: Support - Apple Developer

Wishing you well, take care.
