random windows opening

My Safari will randomly open unsolicited tabs every now and then, usually for shopping websites that I have not authorized. This does not happen with Google Chrome. I think it's some sort of virus but I can't remember how I would have gotten it/how to stop it. Suggestions? Windows will open even when I have Safari closed and they will force my computer to exit full-screen (when I'm using it) to look at the sites
