I’ve just bought a card reader but it’s not working

With introduction of iPadOS, the import photos prompt doesn’t occur. Instead, you should be able to simply import using the native Files App.

What type of “card reader”? Is this an Apple or third-party accessory? What specifically happens when you connect the reader to your iPad? Do you see any errors - and if so what are the reported errors?

yes it’s a genuine Apple Card reader, but it’s not coming up with the import from the card.
