how to sync photos from Mac to iphone

How do I sync photos in iphoto onto my phone, this used to be as easy as ticking a box. The only was I can see how to do it now is to export the images (Duplicate them) to my Mac and then sync that folder. This is a really clunky way to do it, there must be an easier way where i can add and remove images from the phone with having to juggle around in a physical folder.

The easiest way is to use iCloud Photos.

Make sure your Mac and phone are logged into the same Apple ID and then navigate to your iCloud settings on both devices and enable iCloud Photos. Your photos will then sync between the 2 devices.

Note that if you then delete a photo from one device it will delete the photo on the other.

Hi, I pay £2.49pm for 200GB which to me is good value as I have 100GB library and it gives me access to my photos on the iPad as well, but I agree taking out another subscription is not ideal and the 5GB you get free doesn't go that far.

If you go into Finder, select your phone from the sidebar and then click on the Photos tab, that should give you the option of syncing selected folders - I'm not able to check as when I click on it, it says already syncing with iCloud.

Have you looked at the options using Google Photos? Although I think that may still require you to manually export from Photos and upload to Google. One thing to watch out with other services is whether or not they sync the full res file or a compressed version between devices. I'm sure more informed contributors on this forum can provide details.

Hi Russ, thanks again for trying to help.

The phone doesn’t appear in the ‘Finder’. It only appears within the ‘iTunes’ and ‘iPhoto’ sidebars when those apps are open.

It used to be the case that within iTunes, you could go to ‘Photos’ in the sidebar and when you clicked the tab ‘Sync Photos’ there was an option to sync anything within the iPhoto library. I don’t think there was ever an option to to this in iPhoto itself, certainly never within the finder as Apple never allowed changes to be made this way.

The short of it is, you can now export images to your Mac via iphoto and then sync them back to the phone the same way you used to be able to but the option to sync, albums, favorites, events etc directly within iPhoto seems to have gone. This is a shame as it was a lot more fluid before, you were not moving physical files, just the reference to those files so everything synced without having to move and arrange files on your Mac.

Unless I’m missing something.

Hi Russ, thanks for your answer, I’m trying to avoid paying for another service I don’t need, it worked just fine previously. Annoys me that Apple seem to have dumbed down a piece of software in order to make money on iCloud which for me is utterly redundant.

was hoping it was user error on my part and I’d missed something obvious. I’ve been using iPhoto since the beginning and it’s been easy syncing up till recently.
