time machine disk ejects before backup completion

I've been trying to back up my computer since December using a dedicated time machine external drive that connects to my MacBook via the Apple brand USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. However, in the middle of the backup, the disc ejects. I cannot connect the drive any other way, as my MacBook only has one USB-C port. I've been using this drive for ages. Why the issue now? Do I need a new drive? I've replaced this adapter 3 times in the past 3 years. Thanks.

Are you getting the error on your Mac that "the disk [disk name] was not ejected properly..." ?

Does the external drive connect to the adapter via USB-C or USB-A? If it uses USB-C, I would try removing the adapter and connecting it directly and see if the backup completes without issue.

If you're connecting through the adapter's USB-A port, perhaps there is a problem with the adapter - the fact that you have replaced it 3 times already sounds like it could be trouble. Does it drop the connection to devices plugged into the other ports on the adapter? You could try a cheap USB-A to USB-C adapter to bypass the Apple Multiport Adapter.

Make sure all ports and connectors are clean and free of dirt/dust/debris and are securely connected.

It is certainly possible that the external drive could be failing, but I would troubleshoot the adapter first.
