How to connect your iPad to a HiFi system or HomeCinema

The iPad doesn't support audio out via the CCK which is the only USB connection available.

Basically there are two easy ways to connect to a home audio system. One is via a cable from the headphone jack and the other is via Bluetooth.

If you want to play a movie on your iPad and watch it on your TV you will need an accessory connector. You can use:

VGA connector:

with the VGA connector you will still need to connect the audio separately.

the Component AV cable includes audio connections to connect to your TV/Home theater.

I have two Apple keyboards that work with the USB Camera Connection Kit. I also have a headset with microphone that works. Wanting to if the Griffin iMic USB Audio Interface would work with the the the CCK, it does. It has both audio in and out and a mic input.

I have also heard that some people have hooked up audio switching devices to the iPad.

The USB CCK does support some audio. the site at the end says:

When you plug one of these audio accessories into the adapter's USB port, all audio is routed through the USB-audio accessory. While I didn't have enough USB headphones, headsets, and speakers on hand to test this feature exhaustively, my results with a handful of devices confirm Glenn's experiences. In fact, the iPad treats a connected USB-audio accessory much like a set of headphones connected to the iPad's headphone jack: If you unplug the USB cable or adapter while music is playing via the iPod app, playback pauses. On the other hand, I did occasionally experience some odd echo-like distortion when using a USB headset.

Note, none of those sources are Apple. That is why I said 'support'. The USB CCK does NOT support audio via the USB port, but as you've noticed it does work somewhat. If/when Apple says it supports it then one can use it as a viable method to hook up audio and who knows, maybe even video, but that time has not yet come. Until then you use it for audio at your own risk. It could stop working with any software update to the OS.

I have Apple's iPod dock. It has composite video and S-video outs. Also uses apple remote. I had an adapter from the Apple Store to enable my iPhone 3G to use the Griffin iPod car FM transmitter. I hook up the iPad to the adapter to the iPod dock to the composite video to the 40" Sony Bravia. Works great. Good for streaming Netflix to the TV.
