Some Cellular providers will provide a cellular device that plugs into a port on the computer.
I expect they are pricey.

But they can get tweaky when moving, even when you are not moving. Hotspot is a wide-stream carrier-data version of wifi signal, thus is dependent on the continuous strength of the carrier data signal.
Um, the device that plugs into the computer will be subject to EXACTLY the same vagueness as your cell phone. It replicates the connection possible by using your phone as a HotSpot.
You don't need a home Base Station -like device to use your phone as a HotSpot. Just turn on sharing, give it a name and a password, and connect to it over Wi-Fi with your Mac, or use a cable if you prefer.

Are the iPads the only devices capable of having their own cellular service??!

¿why are you averse to some of the other recommendations? what do you want to accomplish or what do you want to avoid?
Trying to avoid carrying anything else… I travel from time to time… and would like to get some work done in the car… my cell hotspot is variable… and wished the computer had its own data…
