Face ID Stopped working on iPhone X

I have the same problem as described by so many. This afternoon for no apparent reason the Face ID stopped working. I did all the problem solving steps. Turned off, turned on. Checked for the latest software. Plugged in did a DFU update, nothing seemed to help. Unfortunately I am outside the Apple Care warranty period on this phone.

Feels like a software issue and I am not thrilled that I will need to pay the Apple tech folks to fix this.
