bash history reverse-i-search Terminal problem since macOS Catalina Security Update 2022-001

history | grep -i srting

for the few cases where you need to find a previous command. Copy & Paste can do the rest

Reverse search with Bash 3.2.57 and v5.1.16 in Monterey works, and repetitive ^R invocations cycle backward to the previous command history. I don't have Catalina installed, so cannot further debug this issue.

And for those that are using the Zsh shell, here is a Zsh function that allows one to directly grep all history items:

hgrep () {fc -Dlim "*$@*" 1 }

The fc command is a Zsh built-in that can be explored in:

man zshbuiltins
