MS Word not pasting contents of Mac OS clipboard?

(2020 Intel MacBook Air, MacOS Monterey, MS Office 2019) All of a sudden, the copy and paste commands are not working between MS Word and my other Mac applications.

I can copy and paste within, say the Notes app, or within Firefox, or from one to the other, but MS Word seems to retain, in its own clipboard, only the last item copied from within Word. The net result is that I can copy and paste within Word, and copy from Word and paste into another app, but anything copied from another app cannot be pasted into Word - although it CAN be pasted into other apps!

It's as if Word is using the Mac's clipboard when I hit Cmd-C, but looking exclusively to its own clipboard when I hit Cmd-V. (Menu commands don't work any better.)

Anybody have a clue what's going on here?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.1

That tells us there are some 3rd party apps that are causing the problem.

Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

IMPORTANT:

Before running Etrecheck assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck in the Etrecheck's Privacy preference pane so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:

Also click and read the About info to further permit full disk access.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Problem went away in Safe Mode, but that doesn't tell me what the problem is (or was.)

I took the easy way out and re-installed the OS from scratch (downloaded a fresh installer). Problem gone.

This was a weird one, to say the least. I was debating whether to reinstall the OS, or MS Office - I went with the former, since I needed to bump it up to 12.2 anyhow.
