Wifi error - self-assigned IP address

My Macbook Air won’t connect to optimumwifi. Network page says “Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.xxx.xxx.xxxx and will not be able to connect to the internet”. It was working earlier today. Restart did not help.

A router is still required and is provided by the coffee shop etc. If there was no router you would not receive an IP Address. There is something wrong with the router you are connecting to.

Or, you can try this: If your Mac doesn't connect to the Internet over Wi-Fi - Apple Support

What is Optimum WiFi?

It is a network of over 2 million free hotspots where you can connect wirelessly to the Internet at super-fast speeds with a WiFi-enabled device. Best of all, it is included with your Internet service at no additional cost.

Optimum hotspots are available in shopping centers, restaurants, cafes, train platforms, parks, marinas, malls, downtowns, and more - the places you go every day.

Available WiFi Networks (SSIDs)

AlticeWiFi: This is a secure public network. All data going over a secure WiFi network is encrypted so you can safely connect

optimumwifi: This is an open public network, like when you connect to a coffee shop's open WiFi

cablewifi: This is a nationwide public network created through a collaboration of U.S. Cable and Internet Service Providers
