How do I scroll the work area in numbers on a Mac?

I have sheets with multiple tables, some quite large, all grouped logically within their respective sheets.

On a Mac, I cannot seem to scroll about a given sheet. I can move within any given table but I cannot seem to move the entire work area to navigate between the tables.

I am using a mouse and a basic keyboard.

Thanks. What are the keyboard shortcuts to make the work area scroll left/right? (and up/down :-) )

Mac mini 2018 or later

HI Folbo,

You also have two scroll bars in the right and bottom borders of the application window.

The length of each bar is shows the proportion of the height or width of the visible part of the document compared to the operating part of the Sheet on which this 'page' of the document sits.

Dragging the horizontal bar right will take you to the right edge of this sheet; dragging it to the left edge will then take you to the left edge of that sheet. Likewise up or down with the vertical bar.

A two-finger swipe on the track pad can also move you quickly across a tall or wide Sheet.

And in a Numbers Spreadsheet Document with several sheets and multiple tables on each Sheet, you can set up a single cell "Find me" table on each page, place a distinct keyword or phrase in =that table, and get to there from anywhere in the document to that table by pressing command-F, then typing the key phrase for that table into the Find box.

My code for this one was "TGT PGE". Numbers leapt to it when I had entered what is shown in the Find box.

Biggest issue with this is that the key phrase must be unique within the document. Find searches everywhere in the document, so if there are six eligible targets, the one you want might not be first on the list.

Regards,

Barry

Up/Down is page up/page down and home/end or use fn + the arrow keys

Left/Right I do not know any keyboard shortcuts. I have tried about everything I can think of with no success.

With a microsoft-type mouse, the scroll wheel should scroll up/down. Sometimes shift+scroll wheel goes horizontally but I don't have one available to try out in Numbers. If you have a magic mouse it will scroll anywhere. With an old apple mouse, the scroll ball should scroll anywhere.

You should be able to scroll about using your basic mouse. I do not know why you cannot. Is it an Apple mouse?

Scrolling around with keyboard commands might be possible in some/many apps but the vast majority of the functionality is inaccessible without a pointing device. A pointing device is required for almost all apps these days.

You can redesign your sheet like Excel with everything in one very large table vs the several smaller tables you have now. Then you can use the arrow keys to move from cell to cell in any direction across the entire table/sheet. Command Arrow will move all the way to the left/right/top/bottom.

Thanks for trying ... I have tried all sorts of combinations as well.

I am really trying with Numbers ... but there are so many flaws that have to be fixed and yet all Apple seem to do is add fluff such as locking your sheet in view mode!!!

BTW. Out of curiosity, I notice your post has an 'Apple recommended' logo next to it. How does that work, especially since you were also stymied about by simply scrolling the numbers workspace ... there appears to be no solution ... yet Apple have recommended it.

Unfortunately ... what you should be able to do seems to be different from what you can do.

Moving around any given table is easy. Moving around a 'spreadsheet/tab/work area' ... with a mouse ... does not seem to have been implemented!

Redesigning a model so that it works like Excel kind of defeats the purpose of Numbers ... the answer would be go back to Excel!

I am simply confused that theres does. not seem to be a way to navigate numbers using a mouse ... or at least I cannot find it! No 'alt-drag' type mechanism (AFAIK)

If I have 10 tables organised horizontally across a single spreadsheet ... how do I scroll between them?

Numbers most definitely includes scrolling to anywhere on a sheet using the mouse. I know it works with the old style scroll wheel Apple mouse and with the Magic Mouse and with a trackpad.

Are you using a non-Apple mouse, one that has the up/down scroll wheel but not left/right? And you are saying it will scroll horizontally and vertically in Excel on your Mac but not horizontally in Numbers? That would be strange.
