Sort photos chronologically (iPhone 13)

Trying to sort photos into chronological order in the ‘Recents’ album.

On the Apple help pages, it suggests clicking on the three dots icon and a ‘sort by’ menu will appear.

In the ‘Recents’ album (where the camera stores photos) no such menu exists under the three dots. Options are: zoom in/out, aspect, slideshow and filters.

Under filters still no ‘sort’ menu exists. Options are ‘show’ favourites edited etc.

So where exactly is the sort menu in this folder? Thanx

You can't sort the recents folder because what it is FOR is to show photos in order of "recent ness" Ie the order they were added. If it was sortable then it woldn't be showing recents, and the name would make no sense.

Do you have the library view (left button as described above)? That has the chronological sort order you are looking for and will show exactly what recents would show if you could sort it chronologically.

Why does that not do what you need?

The library (left button at the bottom) is the normal view, and sorted chronologically, based on capture date.

In my albums section, I have my albums (ones I have created), shared albums, people and places, then media types , and utilities at the bottom - none of them show the recents.

And I'm sure apple dont really care if you move photos into albums or not. They gain nothing either way. They just provide the facility in case you want it. 🙃

Thanks Tony - That's helpful

FWIW, I don't see any need to create additional photo folders (that's what Apple want, not me) so I only have the Recents folder, and the photos go in there and stay there.

I don't want to create work for myself moving them around, (that's what Apple want, but pointless) so I guess they stop users from sorting the Recent folder. Because they want users to move them around instead? (a bit controlling isn't it.)

If you haven't got a Recents folder, which folder are your photos going to? As that's the default folder for the camera. You should find it under the Albums tab.

Maybe we're at cross purposes Tony - since I'm looking at, as you suggest, the 'library view' and pictures taken in 2018 are still more recent that those taken earlier this week.

I guess because they are imported from the previous phone, (after the main import) and for some reason NOT being sorted by creation date - this is the crux of my question - If it were 'working' as it is supposed, the 2018 images would be with the other 2018 images but they aren't, they're in the 2022 library arrangement in the same position as in the Recents folder...

So my options are to create folders to facilitate sorting, which is an unnecessary and additional layer for my workspace...

I might just add - I didn't encounter this with the iPhone 8 where they were always in chronological in the Recents..
