is there anyway around the fact I’ve got a really old iPad so cannot get into my emails

What version of iOS are you running and what is the model of your iPad? (You can find both by going to Settings >> General >> About, then list the Software Version and Model Number)
To try to fix your emails, log out of your email account in Settings >> Mail >> Accounts >> (click your account) >> Log out. Then log back in. This link gives you more information on adding your email account back to iPhone: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201320
