MacBook Pro taking ages to wake up from power nap / sleep mode

Hello,

since I have bought this MacBook Pro 16,2 (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports) I noticed the time to wake is n times longer than my old MacBook Pro late 2012.

5 times with Catalina

at least 10 times longer with Big Sur (of course the late 2012 still on Catalina).

Comparison:

2012 model: after one week sleeping with the display closed, I lift the display and the Mac wakes up after

  • 1-2 seconds (3 to 4 seconds since Catalina) and I am able to type my password
  • 5 seconds I am on desktop at the last state before sleep

2020 model: after 6h to a day in sleeping mode with the display closed, I lift the display and after:

  • 1-2 seconds nothing happens
  • 3-4 seconds nothing happens (sometimes I press the power-on button to wake but it does not make a difference).
  • 5-6 seconds nothing happens (sometimes I press random keyboard keys but it makes no difference, except that it lowers my impatience )
  • 7 seconds display goes on ... still waiting
  • 10 seconds something appears on the screen
  • 11 seconds notifications are full which is very useless....
  • 12 seconds my profile picture is there and the bar to type my password is visible but inactive.
  • 15 seconds I can finally type my password ... (
  • 3 seconds after pressing enter with the right password I am on my desktop at the last state
  • it sill takes a long time to load in background as switching between apps or desktops responds with interval of time.
  • roughly 20 seconds to wake from sleep...

why is Apple making their MacBook so powerful but soooooooo sleepy?

As far as I can say, the power management in the new versions of macOS are creating a 'swap' file before to put the computer to sleep.

Actually that is what Microsoft does with Windows since ... always. And that is a weakness of Windows.

Unfortunately it is now a weakness for macOS as well.

I was thinking about buying a new MacBook with the 2022 versions. but everytime I open the screen of the 2020 and compare it to the 2012 version... it makes me change my mind...

Is Apple planning to improve this point for the next macOS versions?

Well clearly something is wrong with your MacBook Pro 13" 2020 4 USB-C Port w/T2 Security Chip.

It should not be taking so long to wake from sleep nor hibernation. There are things you do.

  1. Make sure you are completely up-to-date with macOS Big Sur which is currently version 11.6.3 or consider upgrading to the latest Monterey which is 12.2 but I would try to get this working better first or try to find the root cause of the problem.
  2. Disconnect any peripherals such as monitors, docking stations, etc.
  3. Perform an SMC and NVRAM Reset using the linked instructions
  4. Startup in Safe Mode using the linked instruction
  5. Boot into Recovery Mode (CMD+R while powering on) and run a Disk Utility First Aid on the lowest container volumes first then the container itself and then the hard disk itself. You'll need to click View and Show All Devices to see everything on the left sidebar.
  6. Do you have any security suite software installed such as Norton, McAfee, etc., etc., etc.? Security tools could be initiating a scan of the disk and slowing things way down as a result. Beware of fake or faulty security tools.
  7. Download and run the free EtreCheck utility grant it Full Disk Access in System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Privacy by clicking the + button and adding EtreCheck to the Full Disk Access list. Then run a scan with EtreCheck and you can post the results in the reply using the Additional Text button to attach the lengthy report. It doesn't include any personal information just technical information about your hardware and what software is loading. This would be useful to see if you have anything weird like malware / adware installed.
  8. You can also download and run MalwareBytes and scan with that tool. You don't need to subscribe nor keep the tool afterwards.
  9. Open Terminal and run "pmset -g" to list the power settings you currently have configured. The pmset command can change these settings which might be useful in trouble-shooting. Use extreme caution in doing so and read the manpage for the pmset utility "man pmset". Make note of what the settings are before you change anything and only change one setting at a time then go test, etc.

All being said and done, this is a new MacBook Pro. But I can confirm that the new M1 Mac's wake from sleep extremely fast. Much faster than any other Mac. You merely crack the lid an inch or so and it's already woken and at a Lock Screen before you can lift the lid fully.

Thanks James a lot for taking the time to answer me!

I really appreciate.

  1. Will do soon (but I agree the root cause may be somewhere else)
  2. Do not have any
  3. So far I tried SMC and NVRAM reset, few times since I have this Mac. Helps a bit (although still not as fast as the 2012 model) for a few days, then back to sadness. Just did that and will wait a few days until I try further solutions.
  4. already tried that back in mid 2021 but I forgot the results.
  5. never thought of that! how could I miss this?!? thanks for that! will try and keep you posted.
  6. None.
  7. will do if first aid is not successful.
  8. will do if EtreCheck not successful.
  9. will do if MalwareBytes returns no found malware.
  10. will thank you at any feedback I will provide as your help is really much appreciated!
