Mac camera constantly shuts off during Facetime

When using Facetime on my mac, I can only see a black square where my camera should be showing my face. When I ask others if they can see me, they reply yes. After maybe 10 seconds, the square goes away and other users say they can no longer see me. This happens when the app is in full screen and nothing else is open. I have to constantly toggle the camera button for others to be able to see me. Apps like zoom and messenger work just fine.
