Problem Trying to Allow Booting from External Drive in Recovery Mode

MacBook Pro 16" 2019

2.6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7

Memory 16GB

Running macOS Monterey 12.2

Problem:

  1. Reboot into Recovery Assistant using Command R
  2. First Screen shown is Activation Lock Screen. Does not show user icon or anything. Shows Mac Smiley face and says to enter Apple ID. I enter Apple ID and then my Apple ID Password.
  3. Then Takes me to a window that has my username and icon with fields that say "New Password" and "Verify Password"
  4. I put in a new password and verify the password
  5. Says: "Could not verify credentials because directory server does not support the requested authentication method."

Click Exit to recovery.

When I go to Utilities/Startup Security Utility to allow booting from external it says:

Authentication Needed (Obviously)

You will need to authenticate as an Administrator to change the boot Security Settings.

Gives button to "Enter MacOS Password"

Click Button

Gives Warning that "No Administrator Was Found"

Only option is "Okay"

Could possibly be something simple or not. If anyone has any suggestions or had the same problem and fixed it, please let me know.

Thanks.

Have a look at the procedure below. If it doesn't work from Recovery, you could try using a bootable installer.

Reset Your Administrator Password Using the Recovery HD Partition

Apple includes a Recovery HD partition on newer Macs. It contains a Reset Password option.

  1. Restart the Mac while holding down the Command+R keyboard combination to enter the macOS Recovery partition. Release the keys when you see the Apple logo on the screen.
  2. Select Utilities > Terminal to open a Terminal window.
  3. Type resetpassword and press Return to open the Reset Password screen.
  4. Select I forgot my password from the available options.
  5. Enter the password for the account's Apple ID.
  6. Apple sends an authentication code to another Apple device registered to the same Apple ID. If you don't own another Apple device, you can opt to receive the code by phone or SMS text. Enter the code in the field provided.
  7. Enter the new password and, optionally, a password hint.
  8. Restart the Mac.
