Files disappeared when I added "nosync" extension

I do not want everything in my Documents folder uploaded to the Cloud, so I change the extension to "nosync" on several things. I did this for a folder with several PowerPoints in it, and now most of them have disappeared. I removed the extension "nosync" and they did not reappear, either on my Mac or on icloud.com. Please help!

As per this article Show or hide filename extensions on Mac - Apple Support

When you rename a file or folder, don’t change its filename extension, or you may no longer be able to open the file with the app that was used to create it. To be warned before you change an extension, select “Show warning before changing an extension” in the Advanced pane of Finder preferences.

If you want to change a file’s format, use the app you used to create the file. For example, TextEdit can convert a document from plain text format (.txt) to a rich text format (.rtf), and Preview can convert many types of graphics files.

Make sure you had turned on iCloud Drive and desktops and documents box see the articles Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support

Greetings, patters5k.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. We can understand why you’d want to resolve the issue with your missing PowerPoints.

“What happens when you turn off Desktop and Documents

When you turn off Desktop & Documents Folders, your files stay in iCloud Drive and a new Desktop and Documents folder is created on your Mac in the home folder. You can move files from iCloud Drive to your Mac as you need them, or select all of your files and drag them to the place you want to keep them.

What happens when you turn off iCloud Drive or sign out of iCloud

If you turn off iCloud Drive or sign out of iCloud, a new Desktop and Documents folder is created in your home folder. You also have the option to keep a local copy of your files that are in iCloud Drive. If you keep a local copy of your files in iCloud Drive, they're copied to a folder called iCloud Drive (Archive) in your home folder. You can move any files that were in your iCloud Desktop and Documents to your new local Desktop and Documents.” Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive

Do you have a Desktop & Documents folder on your desktop? If not, are you able to access the PowerPoints on any other device?

We hope this helps! Thanks for being a part of the community.

Sincerely.
