AirDrop not working after 12.2 Monterey Update

2020 MacBook Pro 13" - after 12.2 Monterey update no airdrops can be OUTBOUND. However, airdrop can be received. This is frustrating after every update this happens. It is crucial for my business for this to be flawless.

Community specialist, with all due respect, your answer is not specific to the problem. We all here don't need to be taught the basics. More helpful would be if Apple recognizes the issue and provides workarounds and a timetable.

For you reference, here are my observations and temporary workaround:

  • When trying to airdrop a file (picture) to any other airdrop enabled device, Finder airdrop window freezes: Cancel button doesn't work, Finder window cannot be closed.
  • However, if I force quit Finder app (from Activity Monitor) and restart it, airdrop works(!) as expected, albeit for a while, when I have to repeat the cycle.

Hope this helps some folks, and yes, Apple, you are welcome.

Hi Erica,

I have the same/similar problem to the original poster. I can see the iPad that I want to airdrop to, I can see other devices on the network. However, when I drag a document (such as an epub, pdf, pages, etc) over the device I want to send to, the Green + doesn't show up. When I release the document, it does not send to the device at all. I've had to resort to emailing things to myself and then picking them up on the other device that way.

I did NOT have this issue last week when I was running Big Sur still. This is a new issue under Monterey.

I'd like to thank Erica for the polite post to Apple - after half a year of this bug and considering the wall Apple can become when it wants to, I'm not sure I'd be as civil. Force quitting the Finder does temporarily resolve the issue, and again - thank you for allowing me to work as a developer without having to restart my entire environment just to move a log file.

Apple - please pay attention to this issue!

Hey there! I’ve been using iPhone and MacBook to Airdrop through many years of updates and devices as I got newer Apple products. I currently have an IPhone 12 Pro and 2015 MacBook all up to speed on the latest updates. After the Monterrey update, Airdrop has been the most useless feature. I used to utilize this perk everyday. Now everytime I try to use it, it’s like 15 minutes process. I read your instructions above, and I’m doing all of them. There’s something that needs to be fixed through updates on Apple’s side. And from googling and looking at these boards other lifelong Mac users are noticing it. There’s a serious delay & reset of all my wifi blue tooth airdrop for each device until I can get it to work. That’s literally everyday me trying to see if it will work easily again like it used to.

Hi there andycyphert,

We understand you're experiencing an issue with using AirDrop on your MacBook Pro after updating macOS Monterey.

We'd like to share a resource that can help.

Take a look at it here: Use AirDrop on your Mac

Specifically, check out the section below:

"If you can't see the other device in AirDrop

Make sure that your devices meet these requirements:

  • Both devices are within 30 feet (9 meters) of each other and have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.
  • Each Mac was introduced in 2012 or later (excluding the 2012 Mac Pro) and is using OS X Yosemite or later. To find out, choose Apple menu  > About This Mac.
  • Each iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is using iOS 7 or later, with Personal Hotspot turned off.

Make sure that your devices can receive AirDrop requests:

  • Choose Go > AirDrop from the menu bar in the Finder, then check the ”Allow me to be discovered by” setting in the AirDrop window. iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch have a similar setting. If set to receive from Contacts Only, both devices must be signed in to iCloud, and the email address or phone number associated with the sender's Apple ID must be in the Contacts app of the receiving device.
  • The Contacts Only option is available on devices that support iOS 10 and later, iPadOS, and macOS Sierra 10.12 and later. If AirDrop is set to Contacts Only on a device with an earlier software version, you can change the option to Everyone while using AirDrop, then change it back when not in use.
  • Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Security & Privacy. Click the Firewall tab, then click the lock  and enter your administrator password when prompted. Click Firewall Options, then deselect “Block all incoming connections.”"

We hope this helps.
