USB drive doesn’t have correct permissions for use as time machine backup

I am trying to back up my laptop (MacBook Air) to a usb drive on my desktop (MacBook Pro). I followed directions from apple support regarding setting the drive up as sharing but when I try to change the backup drive on the MacBook Air it says I don’t have the right permissions. I have changed the permissions on my MacBook Pro to be read/write for my user account but it still doesn’t allow it. Both have the Monterey OS.

MacBook Air (2020 or later)

Salutations Mjmahnken,

We understand you’re attempting to make a Time Machine backup.

Are you using the steps under section, ‘Mac shared as a Time Machine backup destination’ in the article you previously referenced?

Is the permissions message stating you don’t have permission to access your MacBook Pro or that you don’t have permission to change settings for your MacBook Air?

Thank you.
