With the unicode hex input keyboard, I can type all unicode characters except if their code ends with a 0, in which case nothing happens if I try to type them out. So Option+03c1 outputs "ρ", but Option+03c0 (which should output "π") gives nothing at all.

Although this does work for entering π on macOS 11.6.3, it fails on macOS 12.2, and one would have to open the character viewer (control+cmd+spacebar) and search for letter pi. Then double-click the π symbol to enter it in the current content.
Send feedback to the macOS product team about this issue, as none of us can fix the trailing hex zero issue. This is the only means they will know there is an issue as they do not participate here in a user-supported public community.
