Don't use a USB stick for a backup (at least for the only backup copy). The quality of USB sticks is not that great or reliable especially for such an important task.
You should provide more details such as the version of macOS you are using and which mail client you are using. Hopefully when you provide more details another more knowledgeable contributor will be able to assist you.
You should always have frequent and regular backups of your computer and all external media which contains important and unique data. macOS includes a free backup app Time Machine.

I agree with HWTech.
You should have an actual external hard drive or solid state drive and back up your entire computer with Time Machine.
Trusting your digital life to a single device is an accident waiting to happen.
Thanks HWTech and woodmeister50. I am weak with computers and really appreciate your thoughts. I am afraid that I did not explain myself very well. I have an actual external hard drive which I use to regularly back up my entire computer with Time Machine. What I am trying to do is get some limited stuff on to a stick so that I can remove it from my computer as I am getting close to my 5GB limit on cloud storage. This consists of a number of emails on which are attachments and some documents. The problem I am having is that I can get the documents and emails downloaded to the memory stick but the attachments on the emails do not download with them. Is there a solution to this?
