iPhone Xr, two eSIMS. iMessage isn't working

iOS 15.2.1.

I changed carriers and installed a new eSIM. The installation prompted me to assign functions to one or the other eSIM, cryptically labeled Primary and Secondary, as if I wanted two lines. I assumed I'd be able to re-assign things later, so I split them, some to one eSIM, some to the other. The new carrier is set up on the iPhone now but I can't iMessage. I tried switching the names of the eSIMS so Primary is now the new carrier but there's still iMessage problems. I tried turning off Secondary eSIM (old carrier) to make Primary the default for all traffic. Still problems with iMessage. The carrier's tech support says Apple will have to tell me how to assign iMessage to the right eSIM. Any help appreciated, I depend on iMessage.

The article is the best info on dual esims. I wish I had kept the old carrier along with the new.

Installing the new Mint Mobile eSIM alongside of existing Verizon eSIM, I was prompted to assign the phone's various cellular call and MMS and text traffic to one or the other eSIM. I thought this configuration step was owned by Mint as part of Mint setup and activation. So I didn't pay much attention--I expected to be able to reassign once the activation was completed.

When I did ask Mint support to help me re-assign all of my phone's traffic to the Mint eSIM. They said it was an Apple thing, I'd have to ask Apple for help with it. Abrupt end of chat.
