Problems exporting Pages to Word

Not a question, an answer. One of the Apple Support team spent some considerable time trying to help me with a problem exporting Pages documents to Word yesterday. He suggested I try Microsoft. One of their support team spent about as long this morning trying to crack the problem. In the end he solved it by suggesting I copied the document in Pages and pasted it into Word. Simple but it works!

I wrote a book on Pages which my publisher wanted in Word so I bought Word. And copying and pasting was the only effective way of transferring it from one to the other. Both via export and share resulted in glitches. Obviously a software issue with Pages!

As a new poster, you should have started your own main Pages post, however…

Pages is no Word clone, and depending on what features you use in Pages, that translation process may not be able to produce a suitably formatted Word document or none at all. That's the risk you take in using Pages to create Word documents, and why Apple does not guarantee that the translation will occur, or that a resulting Word document will appear identically in MS Word.

Translation woes aside, you should have been able to select Share menu > Send a Copy > Mail > Word to generate a Word attachment to a new Mail compose window.

If you don't want to play translation export games, then either use the current MS Word, or a third-party Word compatible suite like Softmaker's Office 2021 which opens and saves Word documents in their native document format. The free LibreOffice Suite is relatively compatible with MS Office from a document standpoint, but the learning curve is steep, even with their comprehensive documentation.

I am using Pages v11.2 on either macOS 11.6.3, or macOS 12.2.1, and have no export issues to any document format. Ensure you are using the current Mac App Store version of Pages compatible with your operating system, whether on iPadOS, or macOS.

No, it's not a clone and I like working in it. But if it offers to export documents in Word it becomes a pain in the neck if it fails to recognise apostrophes and quotation marks correctly. Actually I think there must be a slight variation in the punctuation marks in Helvetica Neue between Pages and Word that creates the anomaly which would be worth fixing. Meanwhile, I'll copy and paste.

Thanks VikingOSX

Even the Share method failed to load a file into an email. I checked and do have 11.2. I was finally able to email a copy of the report which was somewhat corrupted. I am going to go to that office and see if I can open it on a windows box and try to correct.

I think bottom line is to construct these reports in native Word. Last time I approached W10 I was appalled. I'll take a look at Softmaker's Office 2021 or last ditch effort go Base Camp and load windows into a partition.

If you have used features in the Pages document for which there is no Word equivalent, the Pages Export translation process may decide it cannot produce a valid Word document and give up. I haven't seen this happen, but certainly possible.

Are you saying that you could not use the Pages File menu > Export To > Word and that failed to produce a Word document in the designated save location?

Before you go over to the dark world and try Word in Windoze 10, you might consider installing the free LibreOffice Suite on your Mac and give that questionable Word document to it. There have been many times over the years where LibreOffice has opened a Word document that MS Word could not initially open. Once resaved, it opened without issue in Pages and MS Word.

You didn't mention your hardware, but there is no Windows Boot Camp support on M1 Macs, nor free VirtualBox VM support either.

New poster here. I created a fairly long document, photos and text and attempted to use the Pages File menu >Export to>Word and that failed repeatedly to produce a valid Word Document. Problems ranged from the file appearing but when attached to an outgoing email, having the email facility report "no body". I finally got it exported to .docx on my iPad Pro but the file was corrupted with blank pages added between subject pages and text corrupted. My year old iMac also failed to export properly to a PDF file? I think it is somehow Pages fault but I have done this before without so much trouble.
