On a Mac yes. Pages will open a Word document directly, once opened you can just save it normally and it will save as a Pages document.

To convert a Pages document to Word, you use the "Export To" option in the File menu.

Philo124's answer to your question is correct, as far as it goes, but is missing a caution that may be important in your situation.

Converting a Pages document to Word requires a translation of the word document into language/format used by Word.

Converting a Word document into Pages internal language/format requires a similar translation in the opposite direction.

These translations (in both directions) are done by Pages.

Pages is not a clone of MS Word.

Several features supported by Word are not supported, or are supported differently in Pages.

Similarely, Word is not a clone of Pages.

Any feature supported in one, but not the other application will not survive the translation.

If you transfer documents in Word format regularly with a person (or persons) who use MS Word, your best course of action may be to purchase and install MS Office Mac 2019 or later on your Mac. Using the same application at both ends will make for easier and more accurate document exchanges.

Pages is not a Word clone, though it will make a best effort to translate an unchanged Word document to Pages internal (.pages) document format. And one can then export the Pages document to Word which is also a translation event. Apple does not guarantee either translation process to be accurate, and your exported Word content from Pages may not look the same when opened by MS Word.
