Mac Mini - Sound Going to Monitor via HDMI for only some instances

I have the 2020 Mac Mini and I am using the headphone output for all my audio. However, I just purchased a new Samsung display which has its own onboard speakers. When connecting the MacMini to the monitor via HDMI cable the audio is going through the monitor speakers rather than through the headphone output. But this is happening only when I stream movies from AppleTV+/my movie library. If I stream Apple Music or play any website audio, it continues to go through my headphone output. Why are only movies playing through HDMI/monitor?

When this happens, I have tried changing the sound output to External Headphones but it makes no difference. The external headphones option is already selected even though the sound continues to go through HDMI to monitor. Any thoughts on how to correct this?

Hello Smorgie,

We see you're having an issue with where the sound is outputting to, and we'd like to help out.

As it's only happening via the TV app, try launching that app, and then play content from there. Once it plays, check the lower-left corner for an AirPlay icon, and see if it has just the desired output options selected here, or if others are also enabled. It may help to try switching to one of the others in this particular list, and then switch back to just the Mac.

Be sure to also check for any available updates to macOS. The latest version currently is macOS Monterey 12.2:
