Is the ATV already setup on the same network as the iPhone? I saw one thread where someone had lost their hardware remote but managed to connect the iPhone remote and get things setup by physically plugging the ATV onto their LAN with a cable…


This article, Set up the Apple TV Remote on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, suggests you’ll need to have the hardware remote to enter a passcode with an operational 3rd-gen ATV, but hopefully you can get around that.

I have a generation 3 Apple TV

The Apple TV (3rd generation) needs a functional remote to set up the Apple TV Remote widget in Control Center.
