Loss of quality when trimming and outputting in original resolution

Hi, I'm trying to edit an MP4 portrait movie with original resolution 720x1280 and file size 22MB.

After importing the file into iMovie, I do some trimming, and then try to save the file to disk using the File > Share... menu option.

All I've done is some trimming, and then selected 720 resolution and "Better quality" compression when outputting.

But when I compare the original to the outputted video there's a noticeable loss in quality.

Is there a way to output a video without losing quality? All I'm doing is trimming. FFMPEG can do this.

Nothing to do but troubleshoot.

What is the exact format of the video clip? Open it in QuickTimePlayer and click on Window/Show Movie Inspector and check the format in the box that appears.

Try these diagnostic procedures and see if they resolve the issue:

Deleting Preferences

Open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears.

iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects.  Deleting preferences is a safe

procedure that will not cause data loss or disruption to your project.

New Project

Another thing you can try is to copy your media into a newly created project and see if that cures the problem. To do

that, do an Edit/Select All, Edit/Copy, of the media in your project and then Edit/Paste it into the newly created project.

Safe Mode

You could also try booting up in Safe Mode (see Finder menu for instructions) and, after everything loads, immediately shut down and reboot in normal mode. Then see if iMovie works properly.

Updating iMovie

To update/redownload iMovie 10, drag your iMovie 10 app from the Applications folder into the trash, but do not empty the

trash. Sign in to the app store and open your purchases folder by clicking on your name at the bottom of the app store side bar. You will see your purchases displayed, including iMovie 10. Redownload/update iMovie from there. If not successful, drag your present iMovie app out of the trash and return it to the Applications folder.

The format information looks fine.

You might try running your clip through Handbrake and see if converting to Mp4/AAC makes any difference when you import the converted clip into iMovie and then export it. Do that even if the codec already is indicated to be Mp4/AAC. Re-rendering

often cures issues. Handbrake will do it by default.

You can get Handbrake here:

https://handbrake.fr/

A simple way to do it is to open Handbrake and do a File/Open Source. Navigate to your video and choose it as the source from the resulting screen. Then do File/Start Encoding. Wait a couple of minutes for the conversion to complete. Then save and import the converted clip into iMovie.

Also, when you click on the Settings button above and to the right of the timeline, what is the resolution shown for the project?

If still no luck with any of the troubleshooting, then a call to Apple Support might help.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for your reply.

Firstly, the 1080p option is greyed out for me.

Secondly, I tried the Custom setting with the slider up to the max and I get the same result: a visible downgrade in picture sharpness.

Is this perhaps something to do with it being a portrait video? There are black borders on the left and right of the outputted file.

Thanks

Sean

Hi Rich,

Here is the format taken from Quicktime:

I've tried deleting preferences, starting a new project, botting in Safe Mode and updating to the latest version. The problem persists. I've also outputted every combination of quality/compression. I have an M1 Macbook Air so cannot reset the System Management Controller.

Please let me know if you can help given the format details from Quicktime above. If not I'll contact Apple support.

Thanks
