My lightning headphones connect, but the sound still comes from the phones speakers

I just got my iPhone 13 Pro 2 weeks ago. I got a new pair of lightning headphones to use with with them. When I plug in the headphones, a beep comes through so I know they connect and are capable of sound. But, when I try to play music or YouTube videos, the sound still comes from the speakers. Is there a fix for this, or do I need to buy another pair of headphones?

Different pins are used for charging than audio input/output. Get a flashlight and a toothpick and clean your Lightning port. If that doesn't work click on the Get Support link at the top right of this page to start the service process.
