Hi, we’re traveling to US so I bought a SIM card for my old iPhone. How can I check to make sure the phone is unlocked? the plan I bought is being activated when we enter the USA but I’d like to verify that it will work when I turn it on.
Settings > General > About Scroll down to where is says Carrier Lock.

Contact your current carrier and ask them if it's unlocked.
You are good to go, enjoy your stay. Apple added that about 3 versions ago so not all are aware of it yet but it is far easier than calling Apple or you cell service provider. If you are around North Central Texas post back and I'll buy you some authentic Texas BBQ and Chili (no beans).
It's easier to check it on the iPhone, especially considering some cell service providers support capabilities.
