Mac Book keyboard will turn on and light up, but screen stays black. Thoughts?

Usually this means the signal is not getting to the display.
Sometimes this happens because the machine was last set to work with an external display only. If it ever happens that way, try starting the machine up with the external display and see if you can adjust Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Displays.
If not, reset the SMC or PRAM (if under 4 years old is possible with the PRAM).
