I have this question too!

I am used to turning off some applications launching automatically on my Mac the usual ways (right-clicking the dock icon to turn off "Open at Login", or by going into Users & Groups, Login Items), but Facebook's Messenger keeps launching no matter what.

Mac Pro, macOS 10.15

Duh! Today I found that one simply has to go to Messenger's preferences, and turn off those options under "General".
