I'm told some Apple stores will provide same day replacement of rear glass.
The on-line support just asks me to make a booking without telling me if it will be a same day repair. How to I contact an Apple store (Trafford UK) and ask without speaking to a bot? I don't want to travel to Manchester and have to leave the phone overnight.

It's still unclear whether or not rear glass (i.e. the case) is replaced on the same device or whether or not it's done as a complete replacement. For a complete replacement, it obviously only takes a few minutes and they'll send the old one in to see what can be salvaged for future use.
And if you bring it in, be sure to back it up because Apple always reserves the right to replace the device or reset it for any number of different reasons.
