i wrote a long document in pages using 8 x 11 paper size. can i change the page size to 6 x 9 and transfer the contents over or will i need to retype the entire document.

Yes you can resize the page size. It is done by first having the document open. Then under the File menu, go down to Page Setup. In the middle of the opened window you will see Paper Size: with a pull down menu. There you can select various offered sizes or set up a custom page size.
