Spotlight is not picking words and phrases on my computer. I have tried this with a number of words that only appear a few times in my files. I open Spotlight and start typing the work one letter at a time. Spotlight starts displaying the results and as I keep typing the list gets shorter until at the end no files are left.

Are you enclosing multiple words in double quotes to avoid Spotlight treating them separately? Are you narrowing your search to specific document types:
kind:pdf "See spot run"
kind:word "Reprise success"
kind:pages annoying
kind:pdf name:mythings grocer
Rebuilding the index fixed the problem. Thanks!
