Seperate number for Apple Watch

I'm thinking about getting a cellular enabled Apple Watch w/ Verizon. My phone does not have dual sim nor do I want to add it.

If I am away from my phone and not connected to Wifi will I be able to make/recieve phone calls or text messages?

Verizon has number share mobile and states the following: (https://www.verizon.com/support/knowledge-base-234270/)

"Number Share - Mobile is a service that lets you use your mobile number on up to 5 connected devices. You can talk, text and get emails and notifications* on whatever device is at hand, even if you're away from your phone."

Stand alone mode on Verizon suggests that I can pick a number but only suggests wifi calling: (https://www.verizon.com/support/knowledge-base-234270/)

"If necessary, pick a phone number and follow the on-screen instructions to turn on Wi-Fi Calling."\

Can someone help me make sense of this? So I can pick a separate number but only for wifi calling? (if away from my phone)

The cellular plan for the watch is an "add on" to your existing cellular plan. Usually around the $10 ~ $15 month mark.

It will give you a new number for billing purposes only.

The watch will use and share your phone's number and it will use the phone's data plan when near the phone.

When away from the phone it will use it's own cellular capabilities and use the data in the add on plan that you have gotten above.

When you purchase and set up a Cellular Apple Watch with a provider, such as Verizon, Verizon will assign a phone number to the eSim in the watch, which is tied to your primary phone number. You will not need to add a line to your iPhone. You won't even be aware of the eSim number on your watch and if your iPhone is left at home and someone calls you, as long as you are in an area with adequate cellular connection, your watch will ring when someone calls your cell phone number.

It's seamless and permits you receive and make phone calls, text messages directly on your watch.

Verizon, will charge you $10/month for the cellular service to your Apple Watch.
