Took some steps, deletions, etc. that freed up 25 GB, more than the 16 GB the prompt said was needed. Got to the download phase, and apparently (?) the initializing phase ate up around 12GB and a notification said the disk hadn't enough space. Arghhhh. But many thanks for your suggestions, and I'll see about dropping some apps, etc.
When you try to update what from what to what on what?
Sorry, I've since updated the question, but the notice was of insufficient DISK space., not memory. Tried emptying trash, and same notice when I ran the update to Monterey from Big Sur.
