pdf files should open with the Preview application. Does this not happen when you double-click on a pdf?

If not, you can reset your Mac to open pdfs with Preview always.

Right click on a pdf and choose Get Info.

Look down to the section labelled: Open with and use the drop down to choose Preview.

Below that you will see the statement: Use this application to open all documents like this one. Click the button underneath this called Change All.

This will set your Mac to open pdfs with Preview (or indeed any other choice you make).
