WatchOS 8.4.2 battery drain

Just updated to latest watchOS last night on my series 6. Went to bed with 50% battery life. Woke up with 14%. Charged again to 50% and now in an hour watch is down to 47% and I haven’t used it for anything. This is not normal.

I don’t have cellular hooked up. And it’s always near my phone or good Wi-Fi signal. Something happened with this update. It was fine before the update.

I'm experiencing the complete opposite since 8.4.2 was released yesterday. I've had my watch on my wrist now over 2 hours and while I've not really done much on my watch, except read a couple text messages, I'm still at 100%. Prior to this newest update, I would have typically lost about 7%, which wasn't excessive to begin with, but I'm seeing better battery life thus far.

I would recommend unpairing the watch from your iPhone and setting it up again. That can often fix something which could have gone awry in an update.

I’m having major issues since I updated the software. Everything was working perfectly fine on my series 5 Watch prior to this. My battery life if virtually non existent now. Also when I try and charge I don’t get the usual indicator sign and noise when the charger connects with the Watch nor do I get bedtime mode.

I have done all the trouble shooting ie pair and unpair and have contacted support but with no success.

it’s too much of a coincidence that the faults have happened since the software update so Apple’s suggestion of a repair makes no sense.

please help!

I haven’t reset my iPhone as of now as it’s a real pain.

I managed to chat with another apple support member yesterday and they said it can take up to a week for the battery to function normally after a software update. My watch seems to be better but still nowhere near what it was like previously.

Add to which I can’t get my bed stand mode to work and non of my activity rings are functioning despite me being on the move etc.

All problems since the update.

I‘’m due a follow up with one of their software guys tomorrow so will report back.

Yes, I restored my iphone to factory settings, did not do a restore with a back up but used my ipad close to my iphone to fix the set up with wifi and apps. It finished the restore of the apps from the cloud. I then saw that my watch was doing a reset and then it started working.

I had to fix the apple cash, reinstall my credit cards in the wallet for apple pay. Of course you have to sign into apps like new again .

BUT, My watch battery is lasting more than 24 hours.

You must be under the impression you are somehow writing Apple here? You're not. This is a user to user only forum and Apple isn't here. So we guys are users just like you.

You can however, benefit from us guys and read the posts in this thread and try some of the suggestions others have posted which helped them.

This has been happening to me since the update as well. I had no issues before. I’ve been eagerly checking to see if there’s anyone software update but no luck. This is very frustrating. My watch finally went down to 38% today (not even sure how because it’s been dying by 75-80%) and died within 15 mins. Upon connecting it to the charger and it coming back on it was on 85%.

No luck. I took mine to the apple store where the diagnostics could see there was a problem but no solution. It’s not good.

my battery life has improved to around 12/13 hours (without any real use) but still.

Its clearly an issue with the software update so I hope apple take note and fix this within the next update.

So from inception of the issue to now it has seemed to regulate itself. I reset my watch twice and it was still dying all the day. One day last week it lasted 100% for about 12 hours and as soon as it got to 99%, it died. My watch battery has been normal about 5 days now. Thank God. So it seems as tho, it fixed itself. Yesterday Apple Watch Series 6 suddenly lost connection to iPhone Pro 12 completely. Unpaired watch, did reset, wanted to pair again, but failed several times, getting messages from the iPhone to reset watch in the watch preferences but could not access those as watch was already reset........Pairing did not work neither automatically nor manually as the watch did not provide the six digit code, which happened at least three times.

Retried after about 3 hours and the pairing worked. This morning also no connection, but got it back after disconnecting bluetooth.... As if I did not have anything better to do.....

Battery at 92% currently and have been using it for about 2 hours now.

Suffering the same problem following this update on two watches with phones on latest iOS:

Series 6 paired to an XS

Series 5 paired to a 13

Issue seemed to start some number of days after the update but occurred on the same day 2 days ago.

I also unlock my MBP with my watch and just started getting a message about the signal being too weak to unlock which was new to me after using this feature for several years.

If you just installed it, make sure you restart your watch and give it a day to settle in.

While I haven't had any unusual battery drain, I have to say, battery life is even better than it was for me with WatchOS 8.5. I've had my watch strapped to my wrist since 8:00 AM this morning. It's now nearly 3:30 PM and I'm at a remaining 86% battery.

Mar 15, 2022 12:55 PM in response to Alesgr

I don't want to get ahead of myself here, because I've had very small flashes of hope with my S7 battery... but it's been GREAT since the 8.5 update... I cannot believe I've only lost 20% in 8 hours!!

Plus, it didn't die on me in sleep mode for ONCE!!

The ONLY other thing I did different besides updating to 8.5 was to turn 5G from "on" to "auto" on my iPhone cellular settings. I do not think that has anything to do with it, but I thought I'd mention it since that was the only other setting change I made at the same time.

Will my 4 1/2 month multi watch / troubleshooting nightmare be over with finally??

I'll post an update if I make it past 4 days.. That is the last streak I had as far as consistently good battery life back in January.

I hope this may help you as well.. I understand how insanely frustrating this is for all of us.
